1 θυοσκόος
Grammatical information: m. f.Meaning: name of a sacrificial priest, prob. "observer of sacrifice" (Hom., E.), also as translation of Lat. haruspices (D. H.); adjectiv. θυοσκόα ἱρά (IG 14, 1389 12; verse-inscr).Derivatives: θυοσκεῖν ἱεροῖς παρέξεσθαι, η θεοῖς H.; θυοσκεῖς 2. sg. A. Ag. 87 (- κινεῖς codd.); on the hyphaeresis (of *θυοσκοεῖν) cf. βοηθεῖν from βοηθόος.Etymology: An analysis of θυο-σκόος with *σκοϜός can hardly be rejected, which seems found in Goth. un-skawai (for * us-skawai?) sijaima = νήφωμεν; in any case one must connect the Germ. iterative OS skauwōn, OHG scouwōn ` schauen'. We thus get a side-form with σ- of the Greek iterative κοέω `note, understand', s. v.; cf. also ἀνακῶς.Page in Frisk: 1,695Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > θυοσκόος
